How to save costs in the process of labeling, coding and marking products with UBS

How to reduce production costs with product identification and tracking?

The events of recent years have made it clear that flexibility is key to success in today's market. Skills such as the ability to prevent, adapt and know how to respond quickly have become indispensable for a company to be agile and responsive. Being able to adapt the purchasing process and the production process to changes in demand is essential to maintain competitiveness and ensure the viability of companies. Fortunately, companies such as United Barcode Systems (UBS) make it easy for their customers to optimize the slightest decrease in productivity, and know every bit of information in the logistics process.

With its dedication to technological innovation, concern for quality and the pursuit of excellence, United Barcode Systems has been providing labeling, coding and marking solutions for more than 25 years. Specialists in the manufacture of high-resolution Inkjet printers, printing and label application equipment, Thermal Inkjet systems, consumables and software, UBS technology is part of important food and beverage or pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, among many others.

Their extensive experience, with presence in more than 50 countries, allows them to have a global vision of market needs, so they are fully aware of what a company needs to achieve excellence: on the one hand, stability and, on the other hand, flexibility. In this sense, UBS designs the best solution to optimize costs, reduce time and guarantee the best labeling, coding and marking process.

Facing the shortage of labels with direct Inkjet printing

Problems with paper imports and rising label costs are resulting in a shortage of this material and, consequently, in higher prices. Direct printing with high-resolution Inkjet equipment is therefore an ideal solution for today's market needs.

The price of adhesive labels depends, to a large extent, on the demand for labeling for the identification of boxes and products. Faced with the difficulty of finding suppliers with available paper stock, UBS proposes direct inkjet printing equipment on boxes, such as the APLINK MRX Series, as the best alternative for not depending on raw materials -such as paper or plastic- subject to shortage cycles and volatile prices.

Thus, label printers -such as the UBS APL35 Series – operate with thermal transfer print engines. Using heat applied to the ribbon, the equipment transfers the ink to the label. A disadvantage of this technology is that gradients are not possible and image printing is very limited, as only pure black or no printing is possible. However, the direct print inkjet technology of the APLINK range makes it possible to achieve the desired gray/gradient effect. In addition, with the new APLINK HRX Series printer recently launched by UBS, the droplet size can be adjusted, which further improves definition.

Other advantages of direct printing include that it allows the use of the entire surface of the box, without increasing the cost of printing, while with print and apply label systems we face restrictions on the size of the message to adapt to the dimensions of the label.

This means that the cost of the message in direct printing systems is around 455€ per 100.000 impressions, while that of labeling is 1.865€. At the end of the year, the profit margin achieved is considerable. For example, with a production of 200.000 cartons, the savings by printing directly on the carton is 2.420€.

Nevertheless, United Barcode Systems guarantees a reduction of 50 to 70% by replacing label with direct printing.

Laser engraver or thermal inkjet printer? Advantages and disadvantages of these printing technologies

Within direct printing, there are different technologies on the market. Choosing the most suitable one will depend on the printing needs. The laser projects a beam that is lightly incident on the surface. In this way, the surface is heated and, depending on the exposure time, the color of the material changes, a contrast is created or the material evaporates/burns. Inkjet printers, on the other hand, inject ink onto the surface without the printhead making contact with the surface. The composition of the ink may vary depending on the material of the surface to be identified, as well as the most suitable technology for each application (CIJ, TIJ, High Resolution...), but the philosophy is the same.

The initial investment, cost savings, print speed and quality, integrability and maintenance are the key variables in choosing one system over another. Each technology has its advantages and these can be decisive aspects for some companies, while they are insignificant for others. For this reason, UBS offers its consulting services so that every coding and marking need is satisfied.
